Victoria Royals launch youth hockey program to grow the game across Vancouver Island

A former Vancouver Canuck. A brand new grassroots hockey program. And a whole lot of fun on and off the ice.

The Victoria Royals have launched their first-of-its-kind Jr. Royals Hockey Development Program—and it’s already turning heads.

Led by Brad Leeb, a former Vancouver Canuck and the Royals’ newly appointed Manager of Hockey Development, the program is all about making the sport more accessible, inclusive, and fun for youth across Vancouver Island.

“At its core, this program is rooted in fun,” said Leeb. “It’s about building confidence and character just as much as it is about building hockey skills.”

Leeb brings more than a decade of professional playing experience—both in North America and overseas—to the table. Under his leadership, the Jr. Royals program is taking a fresh and holistic approach to development.

It emphasizes mindset, good habits, and mastering the basics, with support for players of all skill levels and backgrounds.

One of the program’s key pillars is a set of core values known as the Jr. Royals values—guiding principles that promote personal and athletic growth.

“Through hockey, the traits and habits adopted at a young age carry over into what you do in life and in your career,” said Leeb.

Participants will also learn what Leeb calls the Top 10 Qualities of a Pro, helping kids develop leadership, self-discipline, and a strong sense of ownership over their own growth.

The Jr. Royals will host two camps this August at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Co-Ed Development Camp for players born between 2017 and 2015 runs from August 11th to 15th and is a fun, fast-paced week that builds confidence, sharpens skills, and improves hockey IQ—perfect for players of all levels.

The Elite Performance Camp, for Tier 1-level athletes born in 2015 and 2014, runs from August 18th to 22nd and offers advanced on-ice training, gym sessions, and pro-style off-ice development that includes leadership, nutrition, and goal setting.

Spots are still available for both camps, and aspiring players can register now at victoriajrroyals.com.

In addition to the summer camps, the Jr. Royals are teaming up with NHL Street Victoria—the NHL’s official youth street hockey league—in collaboration with the Victoria City Police Athletic Association.

This community-focused program introduces youth to hockey in a fun, team-based, and affordable way. It kicks off on June 24th and runs through July 29th.
