Video: Gig Workers in India’s Quick Commerce: Issues & Protests
What are the issues gig workers are facing in India’s rapidly growing quick commerce sector, with platforms like Zomato’s Blinkit, Swiggy’s Instamart, and Zepto? While these companies are seeing substantial growth, rising complaints from workers highlight serious concerns about exploitative practices. Recent protests and strikes have focused on issues such as low pay, long working hours, unsafe conditions, and unfair penalties. Notably, Blinkit deactivated the accounts of over 150 delivery partners after a strike in Varanasi, while Zepto has faced backlash over deceptive earnings claims and worker mistreatment, including allegations of digital bonded labour and arbitrary wage deductions.
In this video, MediaNama journalist Ishika Gupta explains the regulatory changes, including Telangana’s Gig Workers Bill and Karnataka’s Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Ordinance for social security measures, such as income security, better working conditions, and grievance redressal mechanisms. Despite these efforts, many workers remain unsatisfied, calling for provisions like fair contracts and minimum remuneration. With an increasing demand for delivery services, this video story raises critical questions about whether these concerns will be addressed, as the industry continues to prioritise speed and efficiency in its push for quick commerce dominance.
