Vocational education shapes job-ready graduates: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Manpower Minister Yassierli believes vocational education plays a strategic role in preparing Indonesia’s graduates to be job-ready.

In a statement on Thursday, Yassierli said formal qualifications alone are insufficient, as today’s industries demand talents with specific skills, certifications, portfolios, and multiple competencies.

“In the past, being an expert in one field was sufficient, but today’s job market requires people to have both specialization and generalization, and even multiple specializations,” the minister remarked.

Yassierli further stated that the challenges facing the current generation are far more complex than those faced by previous ones. Rapid technological advancements, globalization, and geopolitical shifts have created a world full of uncertainty.

“In management, there is a concept called ‘VUCA’ – Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity. The world is changing rapidly, filled with uncertainty, and becoming increasingly complex. The key is only one: to be adaptive,” he remarked.

Beyond technical skills, Yassierli emphasized the importance of non-technical skills such as leadership, creativity, and critical thinking.

The minister believes that the combination of technical competencies, such as hard skills; non-technical skills, such as soft skills; and cognitive abilities, known as cognitive skills, is the crucial differentiator in today’s job market.

Furthermore, Yassierli highlighted the necessity for the younger generation to adopt the right mindset, specifically a growth mindset that embraces ongoing development and is unafraid of trying new things.

According to the minister, a future mindset is also needed to build readiness in facing upcoming challenges.

He said this should be paired with an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset that encourages courage in innovating, thinking creatively, and creating solutions.

“Do not wait for opportunities to come, but create those opportunities. With multi-competence and the right mindset, you will be better prepared to compete, adapt, and lead in the future,” the minister affirmed.
