Wales-wide funding of £1.5m to tackle child poverty

The Welsh Government’s Child Poverty Innovation and Supporting Communities Grant is now open for applications.

This fund is aimed at supporting organisations to collaborate and create innovative methods to combat child poverty.

The positive impact of previous funding is evident across communities, where families now have a say in shaping the services they receive.

One successful initiative is the Rise Strong project by the Trivallis housing association in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

They have worked directly with families to understand their needs and how best to deliver support.

This has led to the creation of a community hub at Cae Fardre, offering practical assistance such as budget cooking classes and regular social activities.

In Penrhys, the grant has been instrumental in rekindling community spirit.

It has united families in creative endeavours, including arts, media, and costume-making.

The efforts culminated in a fashion show featuring recycled materials.

The grant has also helped revive the Penrhys Carnival, providing events and activities that would otherwise not have taken place.

Jen O’Hara Jakeway, head of community involvement at Trivallis, said: “The funding has helped families come together to share ideas and find ways to build on their strengths to make a difference in their own communities.

“Being alongside them as they take the lead and drive that change has taught us so much about the potential in our communities.”

Cabinet secretary for social justice, Jane Hutt, added: “This funding puts resources directly where they make the greatest difference to families on lower incomes.

“We’re determined to do all we can to prevent people from going into poverty and help those who need support the most.

“Since 2022, we’ve invested nearly £5bn in schemes which help people access their entitlements and help put money back into people’s pockets by boosting incomes and strengthening financial support.”

Public and third sector organisations are encouraged to apply for the grant, which offers up to £25,000 for community projects, or up to £125,000 for regional initiatives spanning multiple local authorities.

Applications will close on Sunday, April 13.

Further details on the application process can be found on the Welsh Government’s website.
