What Is An International Driving Permit (IDP)?
The International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your Indian driver’s license into multiple languages. It’s not a stand-alone document but must be used alongside your valid Indian license. It allows Indian citizens to drive a motor vehicle in foreign countries that recognise the 1949 Geneva Convention.

Documents Required
Here’s a checklist of what you’ll need:
- Valid Indian driving license
- Passport-size photographs
- Valid passport and visa
- Filled Form 4A (application for IDP)
- Copy of air ticket (in some states)
- Copy of your Aadhaar card

- Choose your state and click on “Apply for International Driving Permit”
- Fill in the details as per your driving license
- Upload required documents
- Pay the application fee
- Book a slot (if needed) for document verification at the RTO
- Once approved, the IDP is issued and typically delivered by post
How Long Does It Take?
- In metro cities, the process takes about 2–3 working days.
- In smaller towns, it may take up to 7–10 days.
- It’s valid for 1 year from the date of issue.
