Warner Bros. Confirms How Many DCU Movies Will Be Released Every Year

The DCU is finally in full swing following Superman‘s dominating run in theaters. With the Man of Steel officially flying high over the skies of Metropolis, many DC fans are looking over the horizon to the fledgling franchise’s growing future. We already know that Supergirl is set to take flight in 2026, with the Lanterns HBO series also premiering next year. James Gunn and Peter Safran have been closely guarded about release dates until a project has fully progressed from development into pre-production. But, while we might not know the exact dates of the DCU’s upcoming slate (which includes the Batman movie The Brave and the Bold and the Swamp Thing horror film), we do know how often Gunn and Safran will be treating DC fans to new stories.

According to a new report by The Hollywood Reporter, the DCU is moving full steam ahead with the rest of the Gods & Monsters phase of projects. But it is also learning from the MCU’s biggest mistake. Warner Bros.’ plans for DC Studios were revealed in a shareholder letter. As well as confirming the rest of the studios’ release targets, the letter also confirmed that DC Studios will be releasing one or two movies every year.

Some fans might shake their fists at the sky, demanding more. After all, during the height of the MCU, the studio was releasing around three films a year, sometimes alongside Disney+ shows. But that is likely why DC Studios is being more tactful with its release quantity. After all, we’ve all heard the dreaded term “superhero fatigue,” with many Hollywood insiders and film fans blaming the MCU for the phenomenon. While opinions on the subject differ, it’s hard to argue that Marvel has oversaturated the superhero genre. Many reviews called Superman a breath of fresh air for the genre. By only releasing one or two movies each year, DC Studios is apparently looking to maintain that label. Although the report doesn’t mention how many HBO shows will be released each year.

What Does the DCU Have In Store In the Coming Years?

HBO

The DCU’s slate of upcoming projects feels as fluid and ever-changing as fans’ opinions about it. When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC’s movies and TV division in 2023, the former announced the planned films for the Gods & Monsters phase. Many of these projects, like Superman, Supergirl, Swamp Thing, and Lanterns, are progressing, or have already progressed through production. But, there have also been some casualties, including the live-action Waller series (which has apparently been forgotten by DC Studios) and an unnamed project that James Gunn revealed has been canceled until a better idea is pitched.

As for the DCU’s confirmed future, Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, opens in theaters on June 26, 2026. Lanterns, starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, will also release in 2026, but an exact release date has not yet been confirmed. The series is currently in production. DC Studios will be releasing two movies in 2026, as Mike Flanagan’s Clayface horror film is also currently slated for release on September 11, 2026. However, as the film hasn’t entered production, this is subject to change.
