Watch: Maharashtra Dy CM drives Tesla Model Y day after India’s first showroom opens

A day after Tesla officially entered the Indian market, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde drove a Tesla Model Y outside Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik accompanied him as a passenger during the ride, which drew attention from legislators, reporters, and officials present at the scene.

Tesla opened its first showroom in India on Tuesday at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Transport Minister Sarnaik inaugurated the showroom and unveiled the car. They also sat inside the vehicle to experience it firsthand.

At the inauguration, Fadnavis called Mumbai the right choice for Tesla’s India entry and highlighted the city’s role as a centre for innovation and sustainability. He urged Tesla to go beyond sales by setting up research, development, and manufacturing in Maharashtra.

Tesla revealed that the Model Y’s on-road price in India will be ₹61 lakh, with the rear-wheel drive version priced at ₹59.89 lakh. The company is said to have imported its first batch of Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs from its China factory.

Recently, Tesla leased 24,565 square feet of warehouse space at Lodha Logistics Park in Mumbai for five years. The company’s entry comes soon after India announced a new EV policy, offering reduced import duties and incentives for global manufacturers.
