‘We look forward to opportunities in all vehicle segments in India’: Texas Instruments India’s Mohit Agarwal
At the recently concluded Electronica India 2025 show in Bengaluru, technology giants showcased their latest innovations in the world of electronics and semiconductors that are set to determine the trajectory of various sectors going forward. Leading American semiconductor major Texas Instruments also displayed its range of advanced solutions for the automotive, infrastructure, and consumer electronics segments in the Indian market.
In an exclusive interaction with Autocar Professional, Mohit Agarwal, Regional Sales Manager, Texas Instruments India, shared the company’s vision for the Indian market, which is registering strong growth in the demand for technologies like ADAS. Here are some excerpts:
What is TI’s roadmap for the Indian automotive market, and what opportunities does the company see going forward?
The Indian automotive market is expected to experience significant growth and enhanced manufacturing capabilities over the next decade, particularly in the segments of conventional and electrified vehicles, according to a NITI Aayog report. Texas Instruments (TI) is committed to helping our customers address growing electrification and electronic integration trends through tailored semiconductor solutions, focusing on cost-effective innovation and close customer collaboration.
To give an example, TI recently released the BQ79718-Q1, which is an 18-S precise battery monitor, balancer, and integrated protector. The solution is ASIL-D compliant, which is one of the highest levels of safety compliance in the industry. This enables safer battery management systems.
We look forward to opportunities in all vehicle segments, with an emphasis on the electric two-wheeler market, backed by strong R&D and sales initiatives within India. For instance, we are seeing a rise in requirements for connectivity solutions like BLE & Wi-Fi in various parts of a vehicle, including clusters, tire pressure monitoring systems, and key fob solutions.
We also have some unique technology in our automotive radar devices that can help with blind spot detection, automated emergency braking systems, and fall detection.
How does TI plan to innovate in the areas of battery management systems, on-board chargers, etc., for EVs?
Texas Instruments (TI) drives innovation in EV battery management systems (BMS) and on-board chargers by focusing on enhanced power density, efficiency, and safety using technologies like Gallium Nitride (GaN) and real-time microcontrollers (MCUs).
One example of this innovation is our GaN-based 6.6 kW bi-directional onboard charger reference design, which can help designers develop lighter, safer, and more efficient on-board chargers.
This also includes the use of our C2000 real-time control microcontrollers, which help customers meet the functional safety requirements of their systems. We also have lower-wattage designs for two-wheeler applications.
For BMS, TI’s innovations focus on accurate, real-time battery capacity monitoring under dynamic conditions using predictive modeling, enhancing reliability and safety for users, as I highlighted earlier. In addition to our BMS AFE and real-time microcontrollers, we also have cost-effective and high-performance Arm® Cortex®-M0+ MSPM0 microcontrollers that are popular in low-cost BMS designs in India.
How is TI planning to cater to the needs of the Indian market from a cost perspective?
At our core, we have a passion for creating a better world by making electronics more affordable through semiconductors. We understand that the Indian market is cost-sensitive, and we are committed to addressing this by providing highly differentiated components that balance affordability, innovation, and quality.
Our deep design expertise and strong R&D presence in India enable us to develop scalable, cost-competitive products that meet the unique needs of Indian customers. Through close collaboration with local sales and engineering teams, we ensure our products are tailored for affordability without compromising performance or reliability.
In addition to providing a comprehensive portfolio of cost-optimised products, we also focus on enabling our customers to accelerate their time-to-market using our systems expertise and design resources. One example that illustrates both cost and time savings is our two- and three-wheeler reference design, TIDM-02017, which is a 5kW 48V reference design suitable for the Indian market.
The design features a cost-effective F28P65x C2000 real-time microcontroller, along with the DRV3255 integrated gate driver with high gate-drive strength and advanced monitoring and protection functions to enable robust inverter operation.
How is TI supporting the shift towards SDVs? What role is the India R&D centre playing in the shift?
TI is supporting the shift towards software-defined vehicles (SDVs) by developing analog and embedded processing semiconductors that enable greater vehicle autonomy and enhanced safety features.
TI’s portfolio includes innovative radar sensors, lidar drivers, high-performance embedded processors, and power management technologies vital for real-time decision-making and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) applications. These technologies help vehicles perform complex functions like collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, and lane assistance, which are foundational to SDVs.
The India R&D center plays a critical role in this transformation by contributing foundational work in radar technology and sensor integration, which is crucial for autonomous vehicles.
Additionally, India’s R&D team collaborates globally to deliver highly cost-optimised and application-specific semiconductor solutions tailored to automotive needs, enhancing scalability and affordability. This includes innovations in microcontrollers and motor control solutions that support both traditional and electrified vehicles.
