‘Weapons’ Director Zach Cregger Wrote DC Film With Batman, Joker & Harley Quinn

Zach Cregger’s sophomore effort, Weapons, is finally in theaters, and the film is already receiving rave reviews. The horror thriller currently holds a 96% “fresh” rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, further proving that Cregger has made another hit. However, that doesn’t mean the filmmaker is resting on his laurels—quite the opposite, in fact. As it turns out, the horror director is already hard at work on his Resident Evil movie, among other projects. In his collection of scripts which he has written so far, there is one particularly interesting, as it takes place in the DC Universe.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote the release of Weapons, Cregger discussed the intent behind the project. When asked how he chooses what projects to make and whether they are original or based on an IP, it was revealed that the filmmaker only directs scripts that he has written himself. Cregger went on to list the various scripts that he has written and wants to one day produce, and among them is a film set in the DC Universe, saying:

“I have Resident Evil, and then I have a sci-fi movie right after that that’s original. And then I have another finished script that I want to do after that. It actually takes place in the DC Universe, but it’s a totally original and it’s not a superhero movie. I wrote that before I wrote Barbarian.”

While Cregger doesn’t go into specifics about his DC project, details about the script and its working title were revealed in The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter. Per the report, the Weapons director’s DC film has the working title of Henchmen, and centers on a low-level grunt who works in Gotham City’s criminal underworld, who eventually gains notoriety for (accidentally) incapacitating Batman. Heat Vision reports that Batman has a very minimal role in the script, while Joker and Harley Quinn play a significant part in the story.

The only question that remains is whether DC Studios co-chairmen James Gunn and Peter Safran are interested in the project. As of now, reports indicate that Henchmen hasn’t been officially pitched, although DC Studios is aware of the filmmaker’s interest, particularly since Cregger has become a sought-after commodity following the release of both Barbarian and Weapons. Interestingly, the Heat Vision blog makes it a point to state that Cregger’s Henchmen script is one of his “favorite scripts he’s ever written.”

DC Studios has already attempted to establish itself as a filmmaker-driven studio, collaborating with writers like Mike Flanagan to deliver more unconventional stories, such as the upcoming Clayface film, which is being billed as a body horror film. Before his departure, Challengers director Luca Guadagnino was another standout director the studio had recruited for their Sgt. Rock film. While current plans for Batman in the DCU are still in the early stages of development, Cregger’s Henchmen film sounds like it could be exciting and unlike anything in the comic book movie genre. Perhaps an Elseworlds label could help bring the film to fruition.
