Weight management improved by family-based approach to lifestyle programmes

A family-based approach to lifestyle interventions is associated with better weight management, latest research has demonstrated.

A new study conducted in India has found that cardiovascular problems among high-risk people are also reduced when individuals follow a family-based approach to lifestyle interventions.

Experts believe that this approach to lifestyle programmes could help to combat the development of noncommunicable disease conditions such as type 2 diabetes.

Throughout the study, the team of researchers analysed how a family-based approach to lifestyle interventions improved the lives of people with a family history of premature coronary heart disease.

A total of 1,671 people from 750 families took part in this cluster randomised controlled trial.

Participants were randomly placed into one of two groups: a family-based intervention group or a usual care group.

Structured lifestyle counselling was offered to participants in the intervention group, meaning they received frequent home visits, goal setting and peer group sessions covering a range of topics, such as diet, physical activity and cardiovascular health.

Meanwhile, those in the usual care group received no ongoing interventions but instead underwent one counselling session and attended annual cardiovascular risk screenings.

The findings have revealed that intervention participants experienced a 2.61 kg greater reduction in weight and 1.06 kg/m² greater reduction in BMI compared to those in the usual care group.

In addition, the results have shown that the participants in the intervention group experienced a 4.17 cm greater reduction in waist circumference compared to the usual care group participants.
