What Alabama football OC said about QB vs ULM

As impressive as Alabama football quarterback Ty Simpson was in the Crimson Tide’s 73-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe, his backups were effective in putting the ball in the end zone as well. Redshirt sophomore Austin Mack spelled Simpson beginning in the second quarter with a pre-planned series and finished 8 of 10 with a pair of touchdown passes.

But perhaps more intriguing was the career debut of true freshman Keelon Russell, a five-star recruit who could be the future of the program at the game’s most important position. Russell completed 4 of 6 passes with a touchdown of his own.

“I expected both of them to play well. They’ve done a lot of those things in practice leading up to that moment. You want to just see how they perform in a stadium full of people … I thought they both did a good job of securing the ball, they didn’t put it in jeopardy,” said Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. “They made some good decisions, obviously they both had success getting the ball in the end zone. They did well.”

Russell showed impressive poise on his touchdown pass, to Cole Adams, by stepping up in the pocket and keeping his eyes downfield with the pocket beginning to collapse around him. Mack, however, is presumably the Crimson Tide’s No. 2 quarterback given the sequencing of quarterback play against ULM. That could change over the coming weeks, but for now, it appears Russell is UA’s No. 3.

Alabama plays host to Wisconsin on Saturday, Sept. 13 (11 a.m. CT, ABC).
