What positions could Jax State football target in spring portal period

Jacksonville State football has gotten through NCAA National Signing Day, but there’ still work to do in the transfer portal.

New coach Charles Kelly admitted during his signing day press conference that the Gamecocks would be making a few moves when the spring portal opens on April 16. That portal window will be open for 10 day until April 25.

The Gamecocks added 33 players during the high school signing periods and December transfer window. They added 11 transfers and 12 high school signees on NCAA Signing Day.

There’s still work to do, especially at the following positions.

1. More Defensive backs

Kelly said the Gamecocks were down to one scholarship cornerback, which checks out with how badly the defensive back room was hit in the portal. They’ve added eight defensive backs, including three in the portal and three three-star high school prospects. They probably need one or two more from the portal, to make sure they have enough players that could be called upon this season.

2. Add another playmaker or two

While there are playmakers on this roster, most of who the Gamecocks have leaned on the past few seasons are gone to either graduation or the portal. Brock Rechsteiner is still there but he will need to be more consistent and take on a bigger role in 2025. They’ve already added some guys via the portal or high school signees, but you can never have enough guys who can go out and make a play.

3. One more quarterback

Kelly said the Gamecocks are looking to add one more quarterback to the three they brought during the signing periods. They added two in the portal, with a lot of experience, even if not in games. The last addition was high school signee Jack Moran. There is also the potential that Jameson Scissum plays quarterback, but he is coming in as an athlete.

Right now the Gamecocks have four or five QBs on roster, depending on Scissum and there’s probably a need to get another.
