Where his love for football began, Kinlaw is ready to help Washington

WASHINGTON (7News) — Another NFL season is here, and although all eyes are on Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders’ offense, the defense is full of heavyweights.

“I’m just happy to be here; feeling blessed,” Javon Kinlaw said.

D.C. native Javon Kinlaw is back where his love for football began.

“It took a while for it to hit me. But once I came, signed my contract, it kind of started hitting me, seeing my family all together,” Kinlaw told 7News Sports Anchor Natalie Spala. “Everybody was happy. It’s cool and it’s a very special moment.”

The defensive tackle is getting a chance to play for his childhood team after signing with the Commanders in the offseason. Growing up cheering for the Redskins, Kinlaw admits he had plenty of inspiration.

“Trent Williams, Jordan Reed, Santana, London Fletcher, Clinton Portis, Vernon Davis. The list goes on, you know what I’m saying? I’m a real fan,” he said. “Growing up, I used to catch the train past the old stadium every day. Every day, I used to see it every day. So, it’s surreal.”

The 5-year veteran headlines a defensive line that has big names like Von Miller and Daron Payne.

“We’re building a lot of chemistry. A lot of guys are gelling together,” Kinlaw said. “Being out there with Von and Daron, being next to those guys, it kind of elevates me a little bit because I aspire to be like those guys. I’m just loving it right now.”

When asked what he would tell Commanders fans ahead of the season opener against the Giants on September 7, Kinlaw kept it short and sweet: “We’re putting it all for the city.”
