Where Is ‘Ransom Canyon’ Filmed? Josh Duhamel Netflix Show Has Texas Backdrop

Netflix’s new series Ransom Canyon may be set deep in Texas ranch country, but the production unfolded several hundred miles to the west — in the deserts and small towns of northern New Mexico.

The Western family drama premiered on April 17 and stars Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly. It’s adapted from Jodi Thomas’ book series of the same name. The show was filmed across sites in New Mexico, a state with a growing reputation as a filming location.

What Is Netflix’s Ransom Canyon About?

Described as a romantic drama, Ransom Canyon follows Texas ranching families whose lives intertwine across generations.

Josh Duhamel stars as Staten Kirkland, a rancher grappling with loss. Minka Kelly plays Quinn O’Grady, a woman with some emotional scars who runs a local dancehall. Rounding out the cast are James Brolin, known for Westworld, and Eoin Macken, who previously appeared in The Night Shift and La Brea.

The show is executive produced by April Blair, who also serves as showrunner. Blair is known for her work on Netflix series Wednesday.

Where Is Netflix’s Ransom Canyon Filmed?

Despite its Texas setting, Ransom Canyon was filmed in New Mexico. According to the New Mexico Film Office, production occurred in and around Santa Fe, Las Vegas (New Mexico), and Albuquerque from February 2024 to June.

Over 700 New Mexicans – 380 crew members, 40 principal actors, and 300 background talent – were tapped for the production, per the film office.

In a press release, New Mexico Film Office Director Amber Dodson said: “We’re thrilled to welcome another ambitious Netflix production to the Land of Enchantment,” Dodson stated. She added that the series is creating jobs and economic output while “showcasing the beauty and talent of our state to a global audience.”

In a behind-the-scenes article from Netflix’s media center, Blair said: “Honestly, you can actually see Texas from some of the ranches. …. Mood and topography-wise, it’s very, very similar.

From 2019 to 2021, Netflix has spent over $250 million on local productions and hired over 5,000 cast and crew members, per a website about Netflix filming in New Mexico.

The series did not film in the real location of Ransom Canyon, Texas – but that doesn’t mean Texans local to the real location haven’t felt the impact.

“Certainly, we’re excited about it, because it does portray our part of west Texas,” Elena Quintanilla, city administrator for the town of Ransom Canyon, told Newsweek. “People love to live in our small community because it does bring that real quaint, and at the same time, rugged feel, of west Texas.”

The City of Ransom Canyon is located 9 miles east of Lubbock, Texas. Quintanilla said the city has a population of about 1,200. Quintanilla said she’s looking forward to seeing if the Netflix series will spark interest in the small community.

“There hasn’t really been a whole lot of discussion about it here because the series hasn’t aired yet,” she said Wednesday. “But I think once you have a show such as this, with our town name tied to it, it does bring a lot more notoriety.”
