  • India vs Pakistan vs Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka: Which country offers cheapest train tickets

Indian Railways operates many different trains on a vast network.

New Delhi: Indian Railways (IR) is considered to be the backbone of the Indian economy as it manages a vast rail network that is placed at number 4 in the world. IR has emerged as the most popular mode of transport in the country. The National Carrier frequently runs special trains on the occasions of various festivals like Diwali, Holi, Maha Kumbh Mela, and Chatth Puja.

Here we will do a comparative study of the fare and ticket prices of Indian Railways.

Indian Railways operates many different trains on a vast network. Some of the most popular trains are Shatabdi Express, Rajdhani Express, Garib Rath, Amrit Bharat, Tejas Express, and Vande Bharat among others. Talking about the rates and prices, Indian Railways has not raised passenger fares in the last five years. If we compare to neighbouring countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, the fares of Indian Railways are significantly lower.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, while speaking in the Lok Sabha, emphasized that Indian Railways has not increased passenger fares since 2020. India continues to have the lowest railway fares globally. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided a comparative analysis which stated that a 350 km train journey in India costs just Rs 121.

However, the travelling cost of the same distance (350 km) by train in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka costs Rs 436, Rs 323, and Rs 413, respectively while in Europe, railway fares are nearly 10 to 20 times higher than in India.

Indian Railways Ticket Subsidy

Indian Railways provides affordable services to all strata of society and gave a subsidy of Rs 56,993 crore on passenger tickets in 2022- 23. This amounts to a concession of 46 per cent on average, to every person, travelling on Railways.

“In other words for easier understanding, if the cost of providing service is Rs 100, then the price of ticket is Rs 54 only. This subsidy is continuing for all passengers.

“Further, concessions beyond this subsidy amount are continuing for many categories like 4 categories of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjans), 11 categories of patients, and 8 categories of students,” Vaishnaw said.
