It is a full seating train only. This train had faced adversity a couple of times, but it has continued to run despite it. It is worth highlighting that this train is just about always full; people need to book train tickets ahead of time when using the railway system. It is known as the Toy Train. The train glides through lovely stations like Ketti, Lovedale and Wellington with all those stations have colonial charm. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway travels 46 kilometres in about 5 hours. This is a journey where you enjoy the trip. The train goes from Mettupalayam (326 metres) to Ooty (2,203 metres).

One of the most fascinating features about this train is the rack-and-pinion system, the only one in operation in India. This allows the train to climb steep grades, making the trip unique and interesting.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2005, along with the other two sites, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Kalka-Shimla Railway as part of India’s Mountain Railways.

Located in the stunning Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a century-old engineering marvel. Built in 1908 during British colonial rule, it connected the hill station of Ooty (Udhagamandalem) to the town of Mettupalayam at the foothills. Tickets can be booked on the IRCTC website, or at an actual railway station. Please note that tickets can sell out very quickly, especially during peak periods (April to June and September to January).
