Why Shawn Levy Is the Right Person to Direct a ‘Star Wars’ Movie

Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy

has opened up about the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter

, the movie being worked on by Stranger Things director Shawn Levy

that will star Ryan Gosling and arrive in cinemas in 2027. During this year’s Star Wars Celebration, Kennedy shared some insight into why Levy was the right person to make a Star Wars movie in this new era of the near-50-year-old franchise.

As far as many fans are concerned, the Star Wars franchise has mostly been failing for years if not decades. There are some that even believe everything other than the original sacred trilogy should be wiped from existence. However, for Kennedy, the future now has several big risky projects in the pipeline to bring about a new vision of what Star Wars could be. One of the first parts of that vision is Levy’s movie, and the Lucasfilm president believes that the Deadpool & Wolverine helmer is “one of the perfect directors” to move the saga into new territory. She told ScreenRant:

“He has that wonderful sense of humor [and] fun, [and he] loves Star Wars. He’s been dying to do this forever. I talked to him, as he mentioned, in 2022, but I [actually] talked to him even before that. He had gotten into Stranger Things, and that success took him off the market for a while. [But] he’s been thinking about this story for quite some time and wanting to do something in the Star Wars universe, I think, his whole life.”

Ryan Gosling’s Casting Was Always Part of the ‘Starfighter’ Deal

Rumors that Ryan Gosling would be starring in a Star Wars movie began to circulate a few weeks ago, but it seems that the Barbie star’s place in Levy’s film was one of the things that was set in stone from the start of talks about the project. Kennedy added:

“Sean started talking about Ryan right from the beginning. When he was developing this, he had Ryan in mind. With Star Wars, it’s really tough because everybody wants to know things, so rumors get out. It was funny to hear Shawn sort of tee that up with Ryan, because there are endless rumors–some things are factual and some things are not. Really, the way we look at it is [that] we just don’t respond to any of it. At the end of the day, we’re only going to talk about the things that we know are real and not really spend time talking about speculation. That’s pretty much how we handle it.”

Star Wars: Starfighter is just one of several movies being working on right now. Jon Favreau will bring The Mandalorian & Grogu to cinemas in 2026, followed by Levy’s Starfighter in 2027. Also in the mix is Taika Waititi’s movie, which is moving along at “Taika-time” speed according to Kennedy, but is still very much in development. James Mangold is also set to deliver his Dawn of the Jedi movie sometime in the coming years. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. It seems that, one way or another, Star Wars is coming back to the big screen in a big way, and nothing is going to stop it.
