Why Until Dawn Was More Taxing to Make for Director Than DCEU Film With 90% RT Score
Until Dawn director David F. Sandberg breaks down exactly why the horror adaptation was harder to make than Shazam! and its sequel.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sandberg was asked about the complex shifts and constant changes behind the scenes while he was working on both of DC’s Shazam! films, and whether returning to the horror genre was what he was looking for after such a tumultuous chapter in his career. “Yes, but Until Dawn was a more complicated movie than any of the Shazam! movies,” Sandberg replied.

The Oscar-winning composer of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners explains just how much work went in to bringing the period horror’s most iconic scene to life.
“It was very hard to make this movie, and it was a very ambitious movie for the time and the money we had,” Sandberg added. “But I was so eager to do horror again, and this was a dream come true in that I got to do lots of full-on R-rated kills and gore and special effects and special makeup and monsters. I’ve been wanting to do all of these things since I was a little kid. So that was very welcomed, but it was a challenge, for sure.”
Until Dawn Has Critics Split
Following the release of numerous shorts published online, Sandberg found breakout success with 2016’s Lights Out, which was adapted from his short film of the same name. Sandberg then directed 2017’s Annabelle: Creation, which was followed by Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods in 2019 and 2023, respectively. Until Dawn not only marks Sandberg’s return to the horror genre, but his first video game adaptation. Until Dawn features an ensemble cast including Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Maia Mitchell, Belmont Cameli, and returning star from the original game – Peter Stormare. Following the film’s April 25 release and preview screenings, early reviews for Until Dawn have been fairly split, leaving the film with a 60% “Fresh” rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes as of the time of writing.

Whereas the original game was a fairly standard piece of slasher-horror fare, the Until Dawn film is set to shake things up by dropping its core cast of characters into the middle of a murderous time loop. Until Dawn writer-producer Gary Dauberman recently confirmed that, while the overarching story goes in a far different direction than the game, Stormare’s Dr. Hill will still have just as important of a role to play in it. “It’s the same Dr. Hill from the game,” Dauberman said. “I’m not quite sure how to answer your other questions [about his intentions] without getting into spoilers… But broadly speaking, his role in the movie is just as crucial as it was in the game.”
Until Dawn is in theaters now.
