Wild Rose review — from gritty film realism to exuberant stage musical
The phenomenon of stage-to-screen adaptations has been around since the dawn of cinema. Nowadays we’re just as likely to see that transfer happening in reverse. In recent years some of the largest-scale productions to hit Scottish stages have been theatrical versions of beloved films, notably Local Hero, which toured in 2019, and Orphans, staged by the National Theatre of Scotland in 2022. In the great Scots tradition of “a good night out”, both were turned into exuberant musicals.
Now it’s the turn of Wild Rose, the acclaimed 2018 film starring Jessie Buckley as Rose-Lynn, a talented young Glaswegian country singer with two children and a stretch in prison under her belt, to make the transition from film realism to big-stage entertainment. Thanks
