Directed by Adam McKay, who co-wrote alongside Ferrell, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby starred Ferrell as the titular Ricky Bobby, a NASCAR superstar who seemingly has it all. When his racing team’s status quo is upset by the introduction of French driver Jean Girard, portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen, Ricky’s performance nosedives, leading to a devastating crash. Over the course of the film, Ricky comes to terms with his trauma and life, all while trying to salvage his own personal glory.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby featured an ensemble cast including Michael Clarke Duncan as Lucius Washington, Jane Lynch as Ricky’s mother Lucy, Gary Cole as Ricky’s frequently estranged father Reese, Leslie Bibb as Ricky’s wife Carley, and comedy icon John C. Reilly as Ricky’s teammate and best friend Cal Naughton Jr. Although Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby wasn’t a hit with critics upon its release, it was lauded by fans as one of the greatest films of Will Ferrell’s career. The film was also a major financial success, bringing in over $163 million at the box office against a budget of $72.5 million.

Christopher Nolan Loves Talladega Nights
Back in 2023, acclaimed director Christopher Nolan called Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby one of his favorite films, referring to it as a “remote drop movie” that causes audiences to stop scrolling through channels when they see it come on. The comments came during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show during the press tour for Nolan’s hit historical drama, Oppenheimer, which opened in theaters alongside Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Nolan said of the film, “One of the great comedies… I mean Talladega Nights, I’m never gonna be able to switch that up.”
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby will be available for streaming on Tubi beginning June 1.
