WNC Week 11 high school spring sports girls athlete of the week
Following Week 10 of WNC spring sports, it’s time to vote on last week’s top performances from girls athletes in WNC.
Vote for the girls athlete who had the best performance last week. The poll closes Thursday at noon.
Sofi Alexander, Asheville High: Alexander swept the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters at the girls 4A West regional, taking the former by less than half a second with a time of 4:56.55 and the latter by seven seconds in a 10:48.92 finish.
Amila Lossie, Cherokee: Lossie went 6-for-6 last week, leading the Braves to a third-round playoff appearance. She hit two home runs, driving in three RBIs to lead the Braves to a 19-4 win over South Davidson in the first round on May 6. She had a single and two doubles in Cherokee’s 6-0 win over Piedmont Charter in the second round on May 8, driving in a run and scoring three.
Averi Coggins, Enka: Coggins powered the Sugar Jets to a 17-0 playoff win over West Charlotte, going 3-for-3 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored.
Laura Covarrubias, Franklin: Covarrubias led the Panthers to a 3A West regional title. She ran a time of 44.51 in the 300-meter hurdles to win first place, while her long jump mark of 17 feet, 3.5 inches earned her another regional title. She also finished second in the 100-meter hurdles.
Mia Roland, Owen: Roland was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored on May 6 as the Warlassies defeated North Surry, 12-2, in the first round. She dominated in the second round, hitting three home runs with seven RBIs and four runs scored in a 13-1 win over Lincoln Charter on May 9.
Jaylee Monteith, Reynolds: Monteith scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the Rockets’ 2-1 win over Roberson on May 5 to help Reynolds win a conference title. On May 10, Monteith won a 3A West regional title in track with a high jump mark of 5 feet, 2 inches.
Arizona Blankenship, Swain County: Blankenship earned regional titles in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters, running a 5:04.74 and 11:17.33, respectively, at the girls 1A West regional as the Maroon Devils claimed a team regional title.
Rhylie Druskis, West Henderson: Druskis scored three goals, powering the Falcons to a 5-2 win over Tuscola to earn a share of the Mountain 7 Conference title.
