World Bank Allocates $200M for Climate-Resilient Urban Infrastructure Project

(Business in Cameroon) – The World Bank has greenlighted a $200 million (114.6 billion CFA francs) allocation for Cameroon’s Resilient Cities and Land Use Planning Project. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (Minhdu), this initiative aims to enhance access to climate-resilient infrastructure and bolster land administration services in specific urban areas across Cameroon, the World Bank announced.

The international financial institution detailed that the project’s first component will focus on “transformative, climate-resilient urban infrastructure” investments in the major cities of Yaoundé and Douala. This will be complemented by technical support geared towards the sustainable development of Cameroonian cities.

The second component is designed to support the first by investing in improvements to land administration services. The World Bank noted that these services have historically presented significant hurdles to sustainable urbanization and private sector growth in the country.

Overall, the Bretton Woods institution estimates the project will directly or indirectly benefit over 2 million people in Cameroon, providing improved access to urban infrastructure and essential land services.

This new undertaking will replace the Inclusive and Resilient Cities Development Program (PDVIR), which is slated to conclude on June 30, 2025.

This new project will help remove the main structural bottlenecks that prevent cities from reaching their socio-economic development and job creation potential, in line with Cameroon’s development strategy,” said Cheick F. Kanté, World Bank Country Director for Cameroon.
