World Bank-Funded 160-Bed Extension at Bone and Joint Hospital in Srinagar Completed, Trial Run Underway
SRINAGAR: The World Bank-funded extension of the Bone and Joint Hospital in Barzulla, Srinagar, has been completed, adding a 160-bed facility to the region’s healthcare infrastructure. Mohammad Aijaz Asad, Chief Executive Officer of the Jammu and Kashmir Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) and the Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP), announced on Tuesday that the new block is undergoing a trial run.
Constructed using advanced earthquake-resilient technology, the state-of-the-art facility boasts modular operation theatres, a laminar flow system, Intensive Care Units (ICU), pre- and post-operation care wards, a Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD), and specialised laundry and waste management systems. The building, certified by the India Green Building Council (IGBC), also includes a pneumatic tube system and a Theatre Sterile Supply Unit (TSSU).
Highlighting the facility’s significance, Asad said the new block enhances healthcare services in the region and ensures better patient care. “The use of earthquake-resilient technology ensures the safety and stability of the hospital, making it a robust addition to Srinagar’s healthcare facilities,” he remarked.
During a meeting to review the progress of the World Bank-funded JTFRP, Asad urged the Chief Engineer, R&B, to expedite the tendering process for other health sector projects under the JTFRP and adhere to agreed timelines. He also announced the forthcoming tender for an additional gynaecology block at Lal Ded Hospital. The proposed block will address maternal and child care needs and include a dedicated oncology section with advanced equipment and infrastructure.
Sajad Naqeeb, Chief Engineer, R&B (Central), confirmed that the Bone and Joint Hospital project is complete and in the process of being handed over to hospital authorities. The Medical Superintendent of the hospital expressed satisfaction with the trial run and commended JKERA, the World Bank, and project partners for their efforts.
Updates on other JTFRP projects were also shared during the meeting. Work on the Emergency Operations Centre at Ompura is nearing completion, and tenders for additional bridge construction in North Kashmir have been issued. Progress on the Rohmoo and Trenz bridges, as well as upgrades to 49 dewatering stations in Srinagar, was also noted.
The meeting included representatives from multiple departments, including the Health and Medical Education Department, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), and JKMSCL, which reported the procurement of 44 additional critical care ambulances. The collaboration reflects a comprehensive effort to bolster infrastructure and disaster recovery initiatives in the region.
