World Bank hails Baze University founder for advancing education in Africa
The World Bank has commended Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, Chancellor and Founder of Baze University, Abuja, for his significant contributions to education in Africa.
During a visit to the university, the World Bank’s Regional Vice President for Western and Central Africa, Mr. Ousmane Diagana, described the institution as a model of African excellence, led by Africans and for Africans. He praised Senator Baba-Ahmed’s commitment to creating a world-class learning environment that empowers youth and fosters innovation.
“I am happy to see a university of this standard built by an African and led by Africans. Institutions like Baze University play a critical role in human capital development,” Diagana said.

He noted that the World Bank is prioritizing youth empowerment, people-focused development, and education as key drivers of Africa’s transformation agenda.
In his remarks, Senator Baba-Ahmed appreciated the World Bank’s continued support for development in the Global South. He highlighted Baze University’s impact, including its strong postgraduate track record, national diversity, and plans to establish a flying school to address skills gaps in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
“In 2019, 30 out of 31 Baze students returned with distinctions from UK postgraduate programmes,” he stated, adding that the institution exemplifies academic integrity and technological advancement.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Jamila Shu’ara, said Baze currently has 6,985 students and 920 staff, with over 3,400 graduates.
She described the university as a “university of tomorrow” using smart technology and inclusive policies, fully accredited by nine professional bodies.
The visit featured an interactive session with students and faculty, with discussions on development financing and the role of education in solving Africa’s challenges.
Other members of the World Bank delegation included Nigeria Country Director Mr. Ndiamé Diop; Regional Practice Director Dr. Abebe Adugna; External Relations Manager Ms. Naye Anna Bathily; Senior External Affairs Officer Mr. Mansir Nasir; and External Affairs Officer Ms. Maryam Laushi Dasilva.
