World Bank Opens Regional Center in Riyadh
The World Bank inaugurated a new regional center in Riyadh to serve the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and North Africa, strengthening partnerships and development programs.
The World Bank has opened a new regional center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to serve the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and North Africa. The Bank said the hub marks a new phase in its operational presence and commitment to the region.
The new facility is located alongside the World Bank’s Gulf Cooperation Council office in Riyadh, bringing the institution closer to country teams, clients, and regional partners. Officials said it would strengthen coordination and accelerate the delivery of programs and services.
Ferid Belhaj, World Bank Vice President for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, described Riyadh as “a gateway to regional transformation and a powerful platform for global knowledge exchange and policy innovation.”
The launch coincides with the 50th anniversary of the World Bank’s technical partnership with Saudi Arabia. Over the past five decades, the Bank has supported major reforms in key sectors through advisory services, technical cooperation, and capacity-building.
In recent years, the World Bank and Saudi Arabia have also launched a Global Knowledge Hub in Riyadh to foster research collaboration, regional knowledge-sharing, and capacity development initiatives with global impact.
Analysts note the new center highlights Riyadh’s ambition to become a leading regional development hub, positioning itself as a bridge between international institutions and emerging economies.
The World Bank’s expanded presence comes at a time of mounting challenges in the Middle East and South Asia, including economic recovery, climate change, and fragile health and education systems. The Riyadh hub is expected to play a central role in shaping responses to these regional priorities.
