World Bank Projects Boost Female Leadership in Albania’s Rural Economy

For years, agriculture and forestry in Albania have been sectors traditionally dominated by men, but today, this landscape is changing.

Projects supported by the World Bank, such as the Environmental Services Project and the Water Resources and Irrigation Project, have created new opportunities for women to assume leadership roles, thereby enhancing their economic independence and empowerment.

In a recent social media post, the World Bank highlighted the major achievements of these initiatives, including the fact that 1,058 women have benefited from seasonal work payments.

According to the World Bank, women now represent 50% of the boards of forestry associations, and they have played a key role in 94% of the proposal preparation stages, becoming integral to the decision-making process regarding land use. Furthermore, 106,000 farmers (half of whom are women) have benefited from modernized irrigation and drainage systems.

The increasing participation and leadership of women in agriculture are considered pivotal to strengthening the rural economy.
