World Bank ranks Libya among Africa’s wealthiest countries in 2025

World Bank data for 2025 shows that ten African countries have advanced to the high-income category—the top tier in the global economic classification ladder.

The classification follows the World Bank’s “Atlas” methodology, which is used to assess gross national income per capita, guide development policy, and allocate international aid.

The African countries that achieved this milestone include: Algeria, Libya, South Africa, Seychelles, Botswana, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Namibia, and Mauritius.

Libya has reemerged in global economic rankings after years of instability, buoyed by improved oil revenues, enhanced economic management mechanisms, infrastructure investments, and a relative return to stability in several major cities.

The World Bank bases its classification on per capita gross domestic product (GDP), calculated at market exchange rates using the Atlas method. This methodology accounts for currency fluctuations and inflation rates, offering a more accurate measure of real income growth.
