World Bank to support Ghana in creating jobs for 500,000 youth each year, ETHRWorldEMEA
The World Bank has pledged support for Ghana’s new Growth and Jobs Strategy, aimed at addressing the country’s growing youth unemployment by creating job opportunities for over 500,000 young people entering the labour market each year. The commitment was made during a high-level meeting at the World Bank headquarters between Anna Bjerde, Managing Director of Operations at the World Bank, and Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
The strategy, which is currently under development, will focus on job creation, skills training, and inclusive economic growth, with a strong emphasis on long-term workforce sustainability. Both leaders underscored the urgency of addressing youth employment, recognising it as a national priority that requires coordinated policy and financial support.
Dr Forson stressed the need for targeted interventions to absorb the expanding youth labour force, calling the partnership with the World Bank “a major step forward” in delivering decent, sustainable jobs. Bjerde affirmed the Bank’s commitment to ensuring that the initiative contributes to building a resilient economy while expanding employment pathways for young Ghanaians.
With more than half a million young people entering Ghana’s job market annually, the strategy seeks to align workforce development with economic resilience, offering a potential model for other countries facing similar demographic and employment pressures.
