World Environment Day 2025: How India’s Leading Brands Are Powering the Green Transition

Last Updated:June 01, 2025, 14:45 IST

This World Environment Day, Indian brands are leading the charge with people-powered, planet-positive innovations to combat climate change and plastic pollution.

On this World Environment Day, their bold efforts send a clear message: the future is green, and it is being built today — one innovation, one village, one recycled bottle at a time.

As the global community marks World Environment Day with a clarion call to combat plastic pollution and drive sustainable development, India Inc. is stepping up with decisive, long-term actions that go beyond greenwashing. From FMCG giants and beverage leaders to logistics and infrastructure pioneers, organizations across sectors are reimagining their business models with climate action, circularity, and community well-being at the core.

Planet-Positive Enterprise: Pernod Ricard India

“At Pernod Ricard India, our commitment to sustainability is guided by one belief, that real progress lies at the intersection of people-powered innovation, planet-positive models, and purpose-led partnerships,” says Gagandeep Sethi, Senior Vice President – Integrated Operations, Sustainability & Responsibility.

With deep-tech circularity accelerator Advaya (in partnership with IIT Kanpur) and the Social Impact Incubator with IIM Bangalore, the company is nurturing next-gen solutions in plastic-to-energy and advanced recycling, already diverting over 4.6 lakh kilograms of plastic and agri-waste from landfills. Initiatives like the Prakriti Incubation Launchpad in Northeast India root innovation in indigenous knowledge, while in-house packaging changes — including 30% recycled PET in 2-liter bottles of Blenders Pride and Royal Stag — underscore a strong commitment to circular design.

Building Sustainable Communities: Roundglass Foundation

For Roundglass Foundation, sustainability is anchored in local empowerment. “Sustainability is not just a concept—it’s a lived reality rooted deeply in the communities we serve,” notes Vishal Chowla, Leader, Roundglass Foundation.

The Foundation has planted over 3 million native trees in Punjab, with a vision to scale to 1 billion by 2035. In rural waste management, 300 villages have become plastic-free, over 200 water bodies have been cleaned, and more than 57,000 households now segregate waste. Their regenerative agriculture program also promotes low-water, soil-friendly practices that help restore land and farmer prosperity.

Logistics Goes Low-Carbon

“At Blue Dart, sustainability is not just a commitment, it’s an operational imperative,” says Dipanjan Banerjee, Chief Commercial Officer. With carbon-neutral design integrated into new facilities above 10,000 sq. ft., solar rooftops, EV charging, rainwater harvesting, and CNG/electric vehicle deployment, the logistics major is redefining supply chain sustainability. Drone-based last-mile delivery in terrains like Himachal Pradesh and afforestation efforts with over 1 million trees across 11 states also support emission offset goals.

Echoing this shift, Aditi Kumar, Executive Director, TVS ILP, highlights infrastructure design as a key lever. “Our facilities are equipped with rooftop solar panels, reflective roofing, and passive design features. Water and lighting systems are optimized through LED retrofits and rainwater harvesting, resulting in annual savings of over 1,100 million litres of water and 14 million units of energy.”

Green Warehousing as the New Normal

“We don’t treat sustainability like a CSR checkbox,” asserts Sudeep Mehrotra, CEO, Asset Management, Welspun One. The company’s facilities integrate emission tracking, STPs, rainwater harvesting, natural daylighting, and green zones, positioning them as future-ready logistics parks.

At Godrej Enterprises Group, the approach is equally robust. “Our Storage Solutions facility in Chennai has doubled its energy productivity and cut specific energy consumption by 60%,” shares Vikas Choudaha, Business Head, Storage Solutions. The unit is water positive, certified as ‘Aspiring to Zero Waste to Landfill’ by CII-GBC, and pioneers IoT-enabled and lithium-ion powered forklifts that drastically lower emissions and improve operational efficiency.

Grain-to-Glass Climate Action

“Sustainability is embedded at the heart of Diageo India’s business strategy,” says Srinidhi S. Rao, Head – Sustainability. Under its ‘Spirit of Progress’ ESG framework, the company has achieved a 93% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 market-based GHG emissions since 2020, with nearly 99% of operational energy now sourced from renewables.

Biomass replaces fossil coal at distilleries, while community-led afforestation and mangrove restoration (like the planting of 31,500 seedlings in Odisha) enhance long-term carbon sequestration. Regenerative agriculture in states like Punjab, Haryana, and Telangana improves soil health and reduces emissions, developed with partners like The Nature Conservancy.

On the packaging front, Diageo India has eliminated mono cartons from 95% of its portfolio, with 59% of materials from recycled content and 99% recyclability. Nearly 33% of its PET bottles now use food-grade recycled content, in line with its 2030 goal.

A Greener Tomorrow, Built Today

From solar-roofed warehouses and plastic-neutral packaging to carbon-negative agricultural models and data-driven waste segregation, India Inc.’s leading companies are proving that sustainable transformation is not only possible but already underway. On this World Environment Day, their bold efforts send a clear message: the future is green, and it is being built today — one innovation, one village, one recycled bottle at a time.
