New Delhi: In the last 10 years, India’s road infrastructure has undergone a massive transformation. However, one issue that has remained constant, with no significant improvement, is the problem of traffic jams. Whether it’s Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, or Kolkata, getting stuck in traffic jams is a common experience for travelers. According to recent data, the Indian cities with the most severe traffic jams are Kolkata and Bengaluru, with Kolkata, currently considered the most congested city in India, where drivers spend an average of 34 minutes and 33 seconds to cover 10 kilometers; Bengaluru closely follows with a similar average time to cover the same distance.

People in India get stuck for hours in traffic jams. Now, imagine if such a jam lasted not just for a few minutes but for 12 days! Doesn’t this thought send shivers down your spine? But this happened. For 12 whole days, people were stuck in traffic, and vehicles remained at a standstill.

World’s Longest Traffic Jam:

The longest traffic jam was endured by the people of China’s Beijing. On the Beijing-Tibet Expressway (China National Highway 110), a traffic jam stretched for nearly 100 kilometers, and vehicles, along with their passengers, remained stuck on the road for 12 days. This is the longest traffic jam in the history of the world.

World’s Longest Traffic Jam: Details

  • On August 14, 2010, the world’s longest traffic jam occurred on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway.
  • The jam was so severe that people were stuck in their vehicles for 12 days.
  • The passengers had to eat, drink, and even sleep in their vehicles while being trapped in the traffic.
  • This massive jam was caused by trucks transporting coal and construction materials from Mongolia to Beijing.
  • At that time, the Beijing-Tibet Expressway was under construction, making it difficult for vehicles to pass.
  • Due to the ongoing construction, the traffic was made one-way, which further worsened the situation.
  • The trucks carrying construction materials from Mongolia blocked the exit route from Beijing, leading to an extremely long jam.
  • It took the authorities 12 days to clear the traffic and restore normal movement.
  • According to the reports, the expressway was still under construction, and the convoy of trucks carrying coal from Mongolia couldn’t pass through the route. Several vehicles also broke down, which led to a roadblock.

How The Jam Was Cleared?

The administration blocked all the connecting roads on this route to clear the jam. The trucks stuck in the jam were removed first. Efforts were made day and night to rescue the stranded people. Finally, on August 26, 2010, the world’s largest traffic jam came to an end.
