Yifei Xue Is Bringing His Talents To Acclaimed U.S. Studios And Theaters

Renowned audio engineer, sound designer, and composer Yifei Xue is expanding his distinguished career, bringing his expertise to prominent theater productions and recording studios in the United States. With an impressive portfolio that spans acclaimed art installations, Off-Broadway musicals, and industry-leading recording studios, Xue is recognized internationally for his innovative approach to audio engineering and music production.

Beginning in 2025, Xue will serve as Lead Audio Engineer, Music Producer, and Lead Electronic Music and Sound Design Supervisor for the Off-Broadway musical “Poupelle of Chimney Town.” Produced by Chimney Town U.S.A. and based on the acclaimed Japanese book by Akihiro Nashino, “Poupelle of Chimney Town” features swinging jazzy numbers and a fusion of modern musical theater and traditional Japanese music, making the production perfect for Xue, given his extensive international experience and jazz background. This production has seen great success internationally, with performances in celebrated venues including Osaka’s YES Theater and Tokyo Cinema Club. The production made its Off-Broadway debut in 2024 at the Pershing Square Signature Center in New York and is set to hit stages throughout the United States and Japan and return to Off-Broadway stages in the coming year. The musical also earned its composer, Ko Tanaka, the prestigious Big HAL Collection Award, which was presented to him at the 2025 Future Creation Exhibition in Tokyo.

Xue’s reputation in music and sound design was firmly established in 2019 at the internationally-recognized Aichi Triennale, one of Japan’s largest art festivals, where he was the Sound Designer, Music Producer, and Audio Engineer for the musical theater production “Desire Caught by the Tail.” Based on a play by Pablo Picasso, composed by Ko Tanaka, and produced by the Taigen Teikoku theater company, “Desire Caught by the Tail” stole the show at the Aichi Triennale, which annually features more than 60 artists from over 20 countries. Xue contributed significantly to the musical’s composition, led all sound design for the project, and managed music production and engineering both during the recording stage and live performances. “Desire Caught by the Tail” drew international media attention, with coverage in outlets such as Sanspo and Broadway World.

Xue also took on the role of Lead Audio Engineer for “Vincent the Musical” at New York City’s Chain Theater, as part of the Spark Theater Festival NYC. For this production, Xue was responsible for all aspects of audio engineering and sound design, as well as live mixing for both the band and vocals. The musical, written by Gabriella Ammirato and composed by Yen-Nien Hsu, received notable press in publications including Voyage LA and Broadway World.

Xue is also currently the primary composer, audio engineer, and sound designer for the art installation “Self-Doubt” by acclaimed artist Zoe Juang. This multimedia work, set to be exhibited at Dia: Chelsea in New York City, seeks to reframe the often-misunderstood concept of self-doubt as a catalyst for self-reflection and growth. Xue will be composing original music, producing and engineering the recording sessions, and engineering audio for the live exhibit, which will be open to the public from 2026 to 2027.

In addition to his theatrical and installation work, Xue has cemented his status in the recording industry through his ongoing role since 2022 at Power Station at BerkleeNYC, the prestigious recording studio where jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock and Esperanza Spalding have recorded, as well as Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, and The Rolling Stones. As a Lead Audio Engineer and Producer, Xue has supervised and engineered a range of high-profile projects, including a live concert recording with the Grammy-winning Berklee Indian Ensemble and BerkleeNYC’s Friday Concert Series at their theater The Black Box. His other credits include performing as the Music Producer and Audio Engineer for the hit single “Maybe in the Summer” by recording artist Karissa Bone.

Through his broad portfolio of collaborations with internationally recognized artists and institutions, Yifei Xue continues to make significant contributions across the music, theater, and visual arts sectors. His ongoing and forthcoming projects affirm his reputation as a leading figure in the global field of audio engineering and sound design.
