Yigo mayor seeks CLTC property for new village sports complex | News
Yigo Mayor Frances Lizama is appealing to the CHamoru Land Trust Commission for 13.4 acres of Land Trust property for a new village sports complex.
More than half of the 43-acre property, known as Lot 7055, is located behind the GAIN animal shelter off of Marine Corps Drive and is currently reserved for use by the Guam Waterworks Authority.
Lizama said she wants to build a new centralized recreational facility for Yigo on the remaining land.
“We only have one gym, the softball field, and the basketball court, and with our growing community, we don’t have the facilities to accommodate the growth,” Lizama told the Pacific Daily News on Aug. 15, two days after discussing the matter with the Yigo Municipal Planning Council during their meeting.
The facility, if approved, will house inside and outside courts, fields, and pitches for football, soccer, basketball, futsal, and volleyball, the Yigo mayor said. Lizama also intends to include playgrounds and a walking path.
Part of what inspired this project was constant flooding of the Yigo softball field. Lizama said she wants to build a better and safer zone for families to enjoy and is already supported in this venture by her village council.
“When we did the swearing in of the council in January, my speech was about utilizing Lot 7055 for this,” Lizama said. “I want to keep all our facilities in one area. For the current softball field, I want to turn it into a park with maybe a pavilion and spaces for picnics.”
To build more traction for the facility, Lizama has spoken with the president of the Guam Football Association about a possible partnership, coordinating summer classes and starting sports programs that would also be open to other villages.
The CLTC has yet to respond to Lizama’s letter.
“I’m hoping that eventually the Legislature and the community support what I’m trying to do, because this will only benefit everyone, and it’s how we can be keeping up with our growth,” Lizama added.
