Live-Action Minecraft Movie Trailer Gets An Animated Recreation

Live-action adaptations of animated media are enduring an onslaught of criticism from fans of all ages, and the official trailer for A Minecraft Movie is no exception. After the trailer amassed over one million dislikes on YouTube in just a handful of days, a viral video recreating The Minecraft Movie as an animated film is only emphasizing how unpopular the live-action trend has become.

CBR revealed the record-breaking statistics for Warner Bros’ Pictures A Minecraft Movie trailer, reporting that the number of dislikes on the video has now surpassed 1.2 million — a stark comparison to the number of likes, which is currently hovering at around 588K. This impressive milestone was met after only three days, underscoring the amount of negativity that the trailer has received since its debut. For many fans, a majority of their criticism revolved around the design of A Minecraft Movie, with multiple comments suggesting that the live-action look of the traditionally animated Minecraft world was visually unappealing and even somewhat jarring.

These criticisms prompted X user Alumio (@Alumio_) to share a video of the entire trailer, painstakingly reverted to familiar, animated Minecraft imagery. This version of the trailer earned more than 70K likes in less than a day, as well as rave reviews from fans on both X and YouTube. Numerous commenters praised the animated trailer’s design and stated that it looked far more professional than the original trailer, with one fan even going so far as to say “We live in a world where so-called “amateurs” make better trailers and movie concepts than Hollywood. Another top comment simply stated, “This looks better than the official one in literally every way.”

“Ugly Sonic Treatment” and the Downfall of Live-Action Adaptations

Some viewers also drew comparisons between A Minecraft Movie‘s trailer and the original design for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog, which was so negatively received by fans that the film was delayed by several months to allow for a complete redesign of Sonic. A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess explicitly stated in January that he would be hoping to avoid another “Ugly Sonic” situation. Unfortunately, it seems like Hess’s hopes may have been too high.

In general, however, many live-action adaptions of animated properties have endured a harsh reception from fans. Disney movies are especially popular targets, with plenty of fans preferring the nostalgia of the original animated films rather than the glossy, ultra-modern look of live-action remakes. In contrast, numerous animated movies and franchises have performed incredibly well, both in box offices and on the Internet; the Spider-Verse series, for example, has garnered numerous accolades since the debut of the first installment, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, in 2018. With these successes — and the negative responses to A Minecraft Movie thus far — it seems that sticking to the original animated style of a movie or video game may be a smart decision for future directors.
