Athletics’ Brady Basso Secures First MLB Win as White Sox Stumble Again
Brady Basso earned his first Major League Baseball win with a solid outing, pitching into the sixth inning to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 2-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday. The win marked the start of a three-game series for the A’s in Chicago.
The White Sox (33-115) continued their dismal season, suffering their franchise-record 16th consecutive home loss and their 18th defeat in their last 20 games. They now face the grim reality of needing to win 10 of their final 14 games to avoid matching the 1962 New York Mets for the most single-season losses in modern MLB history (120).
Basso (1-0) delivered a promising performance, allowing just five hits, issuing one walk, and striking out two over 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Michel Otanez and Tyler Ferguson came in to support, with closer Mason Miller navigating a one-out single in the ninth to secure his 25th save of the season.
The Athletics (65-83) have shown some resilience, winning three of their last four games and starting their series with a victory. Lawrence Butler extended his career-high hitting streak to 21 games with a single in the fifth inning. JJ Bleday and Zack Gelof also contributed with two hits each.
Chicago’s Garrett Crochet (6-12) had a commendable performance despite the loss. He retired 11 of his first 12 batters before Daz Cameron’s single in the fourth inning led to a run-scoring double by Gelof, giving the A’s a 1-0 lead. The Athletics added another run in the fifth inning when Brent Rooker’s bloop single allowed Tyler Nevin to score from third.
Crochet, in his first season as a starter, pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts. The White Sox are closely managing his workload.
Basso’s day ended with Otanez relieving him in the sixth inning, where he faced some trouble but managed to escape unscathed. The Athletics threatened to extend their lead in the eighth, but Fraser Ellard induced a double play to keep the game in check.
The White Sox, who struggled with a lack of offensive production, were held to just six singles and were shut out for the 18th time this season. They will need to turn things around quickly to avoid further damage in their already challenging season.
