August PV sales: SUVs sales soar past 2 lakh units, market share rises to 65 percent – Car News

August 2024 proved to be a fruitful month for SUVs in India with a 10.3 % YoY growth when compared to August last year.

As per the latest report by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the Indian passenger vehicle (PV) market witnessed a total domestic wholesale of 3,08,779 units in August 2024, thus registering a marginal decline of 1.6 percent when compared to the corresponding month in the previous financial year.

Out of these, utility vehicles including SUVs, MPVs, and crossovers accounted for 2,00,596 units, resulting in a market share of 65 percent. Sedans and hatchback sales declined by 19% to 97,198 units, resulting in a market share of 31.5 percent. The rest of the volume was accumulated by vans.

SUV sales breakup August 2024

Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the SUV space with a registered volume of 62,684 units in August this year. Interestingly, Tata Motors which is the second largest SUV seller in India has not revealed its sales volume. Mahindra sold 43,277 units of SUVs and MPVs followed by Hyundai with a volume of 33,749 units in August 2024.

Out of total utility vehicles sold, the sub-4 metre space of SUVs accounted for 85,664 units in August. Major contributors in this category include Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Fronx, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Thar, Bolero, and more. Maruti again took the lead with 32,169 units followed by Mahindra with 19,194 units, Hyundai with 15,717 units, and Kia with 10,073 units.

A total of 65,626 units of compact C-segment midsize SUVs were sold in August 2024 leading to a 7.7 percent YoY growth. Major contributors in this space include Hyundai Creta (16,762 units), Kia Seltos (6,536 units), Maruti Grand Vitara, and Ertiga to name a few. Overall, Maruti as a brand is the largest contributor in this category with 27,601 units.

In the mid-large segment of SUVs, Mahindra was by-far the largest contributor with 24,083 units sold domestically in August 2024 which included models like Mahindra XUV700, Bolero Neo Plus, and XUV700. The latest addition to this list is Mahindra Thar Roxx whose bookings open on September 14 and deliveries are slated to commence next month onwards.
