JLR cars to be made in India: Tata Motors to set up manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu

Chief Minister M. K. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin will lay the foundation stone for a new Jaguar Land Rover car manufacturing plant and a mega footwear manufacturing plant in anipet district on September 28.

Chennai, September 16, 2024: Six months after signing an memorandum of understanding (MoU), Tata Motors is set to begin construction of its Rs 9,000 crore plant, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin scheduled to lay the foundation stone this month on September 28.

The facility, spread across 470 acres in the SIPCOT complex at Panapakkam in Ranipet district, will produce electric vehicles for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and other Tata-branded cars. This will be the first time a premium vehicle will be completely manufactured in India, rather than assembled, according to reports.

The plant is expected to provide employment opportunities to around 20,000 people, with a focus on hiring local talent. The facility will also expected to provide quality employment opportunities to engineering graduates with substantial pay.

Production capacity

Tata Motors plans to produce 2 lakh JLR cars per year at this facility, with plans to increase production gradually. The plant will manufacture high-end luxury cars like Range Rover, Land Rover, and Defender, along with electric vehicles.

The JLR cars manufactured at this facility will be exported to various countries from Tamil Nadu, making it a significant export hub for the company. With the setting up of this plant, Ranipet district is emerging as a manufacturing hub for luxury cars. The district is already home to several major automotive players, and this new facility will further cement its position as a leading automotive hub.

Mega shoe manufacturing park

Additionally, Chief Minister MK Stalin will also lay the foundation stone for the Mega Shoe Manufacturing Park, which will be built in an area of 250 acres at a cost of Rs 400 crore.
