Stubb unveils details of next week’s UN visit | Yle News

President Alexander Stubb is to deliver a joint Nordic statement at a UN Security Council meeting and attend a reception hosted by his outgoing US counterpart, Joe Biden.

President Alexander Stubb’s office announced details of his five-day visit to New York for the High-level Week of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly starting on Sunday 22 September. It his first time at the helm of the annual Finnish UN delegation, which has been led for the last 12 years by former president Sauli Niinistö.

The delegation includes Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen and Minister of Social Security Sanni Grahn-Laasonen (NCP) as well as Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio (Finns).

Stubb is scheduled to address the Assembly’s General Debate on Wednesday, 25 September. He will deliver a joint Nordic statement at the UN Security Council’s High-Level Open Debate on Leadership for Peace and speak at the UN Summit of the Future, which focuses on bolstering multilateral cooperation and the international rules-based system.

The president’s programme also includes a High Ambition Coalition leaders’ meeting on climate change and biodiversity loss, a lunchtime discussion on geopolitics arranged by the World Economic Forum, and a reception hosted by US President Joe Biden, whose successor will be elected six weeks later. Biden and Stubb last met in Washington last July.

Alongside these, Stubb will also hold several one-on-one meetings during the week.

His wife, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, is to speak at a summit on securing the children’s future, part of a programme for spouses of General Assembly participants. The Finnish delegation is scheduled to return to Helsinki on 26 September.
