Badger soccer routs Antioch

Goals have been rather difficult to come by so far for the Badger soccer team this season, but that wasn’t the case Monday, Sept. 16, with five different players scoring a goal to come away with a 6-1 win over Antioch, Ill.

“I thought we got better,” Badger head soccer coach Ross Fowler said. “We did some good things, and I think the boys are starting to understand that we can be a good team if we can just keep the ball moving and communicate with each other as a team.”

Badger got the on the board in the 10th minute with a goal by junior defender Gio Lopez off an assist from fellow junior Ethan Priester.

Four minutes later in the 14th minute, junior forward Romeo Torres found the back of the net off an assist from midfielder Aldo Tapia (junior).

In the 23rd minute, a young freshman got in on the action and took advantage as midfielder Colton Jooss got one by the Antioch goalkeeper.

Priester, who already had an assist, closed out the first half in the 39th minute with a goal of his own to head into halftime comfortably up 4-0.

Antioch added one goal in the 48th minute, but it made no difference as Tapia decided to pad his stat line late in the second half, scoring a goal in the 64th minute off an assist from senior Oscar Nava and in the 78th minute.

Badger had 18 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Johnny Engerman (junior) had three saves.

This is the Badgers’ second win on the season.

“We’re a fairly young team and we’re gaining experience against quality teams,” Fowler said.

All four of the Badger losses so far this year have come against first or second place teams in their respective conferences, but Fowler knows the tough competition will only be beneficial in the long run.

“I set up the schedule that way on purpose,” Fowler said. One, so we know where we need to be and two, playing against competition like that only makes us better. We’re going to learn a lot more from games like that and we have. We got a great group of guys, they’re fun to be around and they continue to work hard for each other.”
