Arakanese scientist Saw Wai Hla awarded 2024 Falling Walls prize in Physical Sciences

Jonathan, Narinjara News, 21 September 2024

Professor Saw Wai Hla, an Arakanese scientist from Ohio
University, has been honoured with the prestigious 2024 Falling Walls Science
award, which recognizes the leading scientists from different parts of the
world, said a statement from Ohio University.

Dr
Saw Wai Hla was named for the international award for his contributions toward
Physics, as announced on 12 September.

The award consists of six categories namely Life Sciences,
Physical Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Social Sciences &
Humanities, Art & Science and Women’s Impact.

The award ceremony is scheduled for 9 November  in Berlin
(Germany).

Dr Saw Wai Hla is recognized as the top winner in the Physical
Sciences category. He is now a professor in Ohio University and prominent
researcher at Argonne National Laboratory.

He also serves as the director of Nanoscale and Quantum Phenomena
Institute, the largest interdisciplinary research institute in Ohio University.

Moreover, he is
recognized as one of the world’s 100 best scientists. In 2023, Dr Saw Wai Hla
and his team made a remarkable discovery to become the first to detect x-ray
signals from a single atom. This pioneering achievement marked that an image of
a single atom had ever been captured using x-ray technology.

Commenting on this honor Dr Saw Wai Hla said, “It is an incredible
honor to be recognized among the top scientists globally. This acknowledgment
reflects the collective efforts of my team in Ohio University, Argonne National
Laboratory, and support we have received from the broader scientific community.
I am grateful for this recognition and excited about the potential impact of
our work.”

The
ability to detect individual atoms, discovered by Dr Saw Wai Hla and his team,
might have significant implications over a variety of fields, including medical
research, environmental science, and security.

This
technology can improve the understanding of diseases at the atomic level,
strengthen security by detecting dangerous substances and enhance environmental
monitoring efforts.

Falling Walls foundation was founded in 2009 to honor the symbolic
‘falling of walls’ between East and West Berlin on 9 November by celebrating
scientific advancements.

This year, over 1,100 nominees from more than 300 institutions
were considered for the important award.

Dr Saw Wai Hla was selected by the jury as the winner from among
10 finalists in the concerned category.
