Beloved annual Jazz Music festival returns – Times Herald Online

Every year, jazz musicians and enthusiasts alike gather in Downtown Vacaville to unite over their mutual love for the music of jazz. For some musical artists, this marks their annual return and for others, including a number of high school jazz ensembles, this year marks their debut.

On the third weekend in September, the Vacaville Jazz Festival is quite electrifying. This year the Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre hosted an astounding lineup featuring musical guests from four local high schools and a number of Solano County’s musical academies including the Alina Adams School of Music and the Live Music Center.

“We love participating and all these musicians come in and do this for free and donate their time because it’s a community-based event,” said Megan Tucker, teacher at the Live Music Center.

This year marks Tucker’s ninth year performing in the festival, a tradition she looks forward to every year. She specifically enjoys the festival’s ability to combine the skills of both students and teachers in a memorable way for both parties.

“For us, I love that we are bringing this combination of students, teachers, and alumni together mostly just because the students get to learn from the teachers who are the mentors and the teachers get to just have fun and relax so it’s really just a good time for everyone,” said Tucker.

As for a few of the festivals beloved coordinators, twin brothers Keith and Ken Stout continue to show their year-round dedication to Vacaville’s local live music every year since 1999. Ken Stout not only founded the Live Music Center in Vacaville in 1987, but he also serves the President of the Vaca Jazz Society’s Vacaville Jazz Festival which was founded alongside his brother Keith.

In expressing her gratitude for festival’s founders, Tucker said, “I have to give props to both Ken Stout and Keith Stout for putting all of this on, they are a fabulous pair of brothers.” It is apparent that not only are two heavily involved in the cities continuation of live music, they are a pair that continues to inspire through their works.

In a weekend-long event, the festival is set to continue until Sunday with live performances at Nut Tree Breezeway and Makse Restaurant in Downtown Vacaville. Live performances include those from Vallejo Jazz Community Big Band, Brooke Fox’s Anthologie Duo, Alive Music Orchestra Big Band, and more.
