Rohit Sharma scolds Rishabh Pant after latter’s casual attitude costs India a wicket

Team India, on Sunday (September 22), bowled out Bangladesh for 234 runs to win the first India vs Bangladesh Test by 280 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Barring the shaky start with the bat in the first innings, the Rohit Sharma-led side thoroughly dominated the contest and won it well inside four days. Bangladesh started the Test well by reducing India to 144/6 in the first innings but remained on the back foot for most part of the game.

After being reduced to 144/6, India ended up posting 376 runs thanks to brilliant knocks from Ravichandran Ashwin (113) and Ravindra Jadeja (86). In reply, the tourists could score only 149 runs in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah picked up four wickets while Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja claimed three wickets apiece.

In the second innings, India were in a spot of bother after being reduced to 67 for 3. However, a brilliant 167-run stand between Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant not only steadied the ship but also put the hosts in the driver’s seat. Both Gill and Pant scored centuries as India declared their second innings on 287/4. Pant scored 109 runs while Gill remained unbeaten on 119.

Set a target of 515 runs, Bangladesh had their back against the wall and needed nothing less than a miracle to stun India. While they made a promising start with the bat, their resistance did not last long and they were eventually bowled out for 234 runs.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto waged a lone battle for the tourists, scoring 82 runs with the help of 8 fours and 3 sixes. Shanto was the eighth wicket to fall. Barring him, no other Bangladesh player could even reach the 40-run mark for the visitors.

For Team India, Ashwin starred with the ball in the second innings. After going wicketless in the first innings, the India spin spearhead picked up 6 wickets in the second innings. Ashwin’s spin partner, Jadeja claimed three wickets.

Rohit Sharma scolds Rishabh Pant:

Even though Team India dominated the Test for most part of the game, captain Rohit Sharma made sure his teammates remained on their toes. One such incident took place in the very last moments of the game when India needed just one wicket to win the game.

On the third ball of the 62nd over, India could have wrapped up Bangladesh’s innings had Rishabh Pant not stopped Rohit Sharma from taking the DRS. Hasan Mahmud had edged Ashwin’s delivery behind the wicket where Pant took a sharp catch.

With the umpire giving his decision in the batsman’s favor, Rohit Sharma asked Pant if he should review the decision. However, Pant advised his captain against it, suggesting that the ball had hit the elbow. And it did not take Pant long to regret his call as the replays showed that the ball had hit the strap of the glove.

Soon after seeing the replay, Rohit Sharma was seen scolding his younger teammate as he told him: “Bhakk behen***d! Tu aisa karega na to jo sach me out hoga wo bhi nahi le paunga mai. (If you’ll do like this, then I won’t be able to take the DRS even if is actually out.)”
