‘Open Source is the Greatest Team Sport on Earth, Not the IPL,’ Says GitHub Chief

“It’s not the NBA, it’s not the European Champions League, and it’s not the Indian Premier League. Open Source is the greatest team sport on Earth,” said GitHub chief Thomas Dohmke while reflecting on GitHub’s journey and sharing bold aspirations to empower 1 billion developers at the 10th GitHub Universe.

Dhomke said that the past decade has showcased remarkable growth in open source contributions. He added that since 2015, developers across the world have successfully resolved daunting challenges, closing over 67 million GitHub issues and merging 180 million pull requests.

“Overall, more than 320 million public projects have been sparked on GitHub,” he said, adding that millions of developers are working together around the world.

GitHub Loves India

At Github Universe 2024, the developer platform announced that India now boasts over 17 million developers actively building on its platform, reflecting a remarkable 28% increase in 2024.

Dohmke’s love for India is evident. “Of course, I have to show some love to India. Now the fastest-growing developer population on the planet, India’s rise as a global tech titan is inexorable,” he posted on X.

Replying to this, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India said “When it comes to innovation and technology, Indian youth are among the best!”

According to the latest GitHub Octoverse report, India is emerging as a crucial player in the global technology sector, with substantial contributions to generative AI and open-source projects.

India ranks second globally in GitHub Education users and public contributions to generative AI projects, trailing only the United States. The country experienced a 79% increase in contributions to generative AI projects compared to last year and a staggering 95% year-over-year growth in overall contributions to these initiatives, placing India third globally behind the US and Hong Kong (SAR).

Dohmke said, “Our latest Octoverse report affirms that India’s developer community is the fastest growing developer population on the planet. India’s rise as a global tech titan is now inexorable.”
