All countries must reduce their domestic greenhouse gas emissions to net zero. The international trade in fossil fuels will end only as countries switch to renewables and end their dependence on imports of coal, gas and oil. Getting to net zero is a massive task. The transition to net zero domestic emissions requires a sector-wide transformation of the entire Australian economy. That transformation cannot be achieved overnight without causing large-scale disruption to businesses, communities and families with politically and socially unacceptable increases in unemployment. The transition cannot be achieved without support from Australian voters. Shutting down coal extraction and exports now, which is what the Rising Tide protesters at Newcastle are demanding, will impede an orderly, planned transition to net zero, not increase it.
