Bad Bunny Dominates as Latin Music Shifts with Rising Mexican Talent on Spotify

By Blessing Nweke

Reggaeton sensation Bad Bunny has once again solidified his position at the top, earning the title of 2023’s most-streamed Latin artist on Spotify worldwide. However, this year also marks a significant turning point for Mexican music, as the genre experiences a major resurgence and is now dominating the U.S. music scene.

Música mexicana, or Mexican music, has risen to the forefront, becoming the most-streamed Latin genre in the United States, claiming the top spot in 26 states. On a global scale, it holds the position as the third most-listened-to Latin genre on Spotify. The surge in popularity is largely attributed to Mexican artist Peso Pluma, who is now the second most-streamed Latin artist on the platform. His unique fusion of “corridos tumbados” with trap, reggaeton, and other regional Mexican genres has catapulted the artist to international stardom.

Following Peso Pluma are Colombian reggaeton stars Feid and Karol G, who hold the third and fourth spots, respectively. Karol G, in particular, continues to dominate as the most-streamed female Latin artist for the fifth consecutive year. Her album Mañana Será Bonito not only secured the No. 1 spot for Latin albums on Spotify but also ranked as the No. 4 most-streamed album globally.

In a groundbreaking year, four of the top 10 most-streamed Latin artists globally focus on música mexicana. Peso Pluma, Junior H, Natanael Cano, and Fuerza Regida represent the genre’s impressive global reach, while reggaeton artists like Bad Bunny, Feid, and Karol G continue to hold strong. Spotify’s top Latin song this year, “Gata Only” by Chilean duo FloyyMenor and Cris Mj, further underscores the evolving landscape, where both reggaeton and Mexican music are in high demand.

The surge in Latin music’s popularity has also translated into significant financial growth, with Latin music revenue in the U.S. reaching a record $685 million this year. This milestone highlights the genre’s continued rise, reshaping the global music industry.
