Strelitzia Secondary School unveils cutting-edge Maths and Science Digital Centre

The newly launched R4 million state-of-the-art Maths and Science Digital Centre at Strelitzia Secondary School will not only create the right platform for pupils to excel academically but will equip them to also embrace the fourth industrial revolution. These were the profound words of the principal of Strelitzia Secondary, Mokesh Harichan, who was extremely delighted at the official opening of the Maths and Science Digital Centre sponsored by Golden Pond 67, last week.

The high-profile and colourful function was graced by representatives from the education department, neighbouring school principals, teachers, community representatives, former governing body chairpersons, community representatives, and special guests from Golden Pond 67. The function started with a welcome address followed by a prayer.

The programme included the principal’s address, followed by the governing body chairperson’s address and the guest of honour, Kobus van der Bergh of Golden Pond 67. There were a few dance items presented by the pupils of Strelitzia Secondary.

The guest also had an opportunity to witness first-hand pupils conducting experiments in the digital centre. The digital centre is valued at approximately R4 million and is a state-of-the-art digital centre. The main focus of this centre is to close the digital divide among pupils and enhance e-learning in the classroom.

The use of digital resources will allow access to online websites to reinforce content in mathematics and physical science. The high-tech laptops and digital projector screens allow teaching and learning to take place at an advanced level.

Special thanks and appreciation were given to the Golden Pond directors, Mr Kobus van den Bergh, Dr Sanjeev Debipersadh, and Mrs Yolanda Niharoo. Principal Harichan said, “The Digital Science and Maths Centre is cutting edge, closing the digital divide. The recipients of this generous and wonderful sponsor will be the pupils of Strelitzia Secondary and the community at large.”

Deputy principal and Golden Pond convenor of Strelitzia Secondary School, Ashri Rupee, said, “As the Golden Pond convenor, I had prepared a project proposal for the Digital Maths and Science Centre, which I presented to the Golden Pond directors in Gauteng approximately two years ago. This was an extremely successful presentation, which ultimately led to the construction of the Digital Maths and Science Centre. My main purpose in securing a digital centre was to close the digital divide and allow our pupils access to the state-of-the-art latest digital technology. Since we are living in the 21st century where e-learning is the preferred method of learning by our techno-savvy pupils of today, the digital facility at our school will definitely be loved and appreciated by our pupils. They have been given the tools for academic success by our generous sponsor. The high tech Maths and Science Digital Centre has always been my futuristic vision which has now become a reality. The pupils look forward to having an exciting learning experience in the digital centre with great thanks and appreciation to our sponsor.”

School governing body chairperson, Beaver Shanmogum also expressed his thanks and appreciation to Golden Pond 67 for the generous and magnanimous sponsor of the digital centre.

Shanmogum said, “Firstly I want to express my profound gratitude and thanks to our main sponsor, Golden Pond 67 for the generous and kind sponsor. It is people like them that not only drive our economy but also put their money where their mouth is. Today our children will have the right tools to advance and sharpen their skills, especially in the fields of science, maths and the digital space. Our country needs qualified and skilled engineers, artisans and scientists and this is the right place to start. We would appreciate it if this new facility can be kept in a pristine condition so that future pupils and generations to come can also benefit from these prized assets and resources.”
