Nefeli Megalovasili, LL.M. ’27, has taken an unconventional route from law school back to legal practice. After earning her LL.B. from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and qualifying as a lawyer in Greece, she built a career communicating complex legal and public policy issues to broad audiences—as a content creator, podcast host, radio producer, TV presenter, and stand-up comedian. Now, she is bringing the communication and analytical skills developed through those experiences back to the legal field, with plans to pursue a career in cross-border corporate practice.

Tell us a little about yourself and your professional journey. What experiences led you to this point in your career?

I graduated from law school and qualified as a lawyer in Greece before focusing on making legal concepts accessible. Through my podcast, media work, stand-up comedy, and social platforms, I translate complex public policy issues. While these experiences strengthened my communication skills, they also deepened my commitment to legal practice. I am now eager to return to the legal field, bringing a broader international perspective to my work.

What area of law do you practice or specialize in, and what do you enjoy most about that work?

My work has focused primarily on constitutional law, public law, and legal communication rather than traditional legal practice. What I enjoy most is helping people understand how legal institutions shape everyday life and making complex legal concepts approachable without oversimplifying them.

What is something about your home country’s legal system or culture that you think people at UChicago Law might find interesting?

Modern Greece has one of the world’s oldest democratic traditions while also facing contemporary constitutional and European Union law challenges. Because Greece is an EU member state, our legal system constantly operates at the intersection of national constitutional law and supranational European law, creating fascinating legal and institutional questions.

What inspired you to pursue an LL.M. at this stage in your career?

Although my career has taken me beyond traditional legal practice, it has always remained grounded in law. Working at the intersection of law, media, and public discourse strengthened my analytical skills while reinforcing my desire to return to legal practice in a more international and commercially oriented environment. Pursuing an LL.M. felt like the natural next step to deepen my legal expertise and prepare for that transition.

What made the University of Chicago Law School the right place for you?

The University of Chicago’s intellectual rigor and emphasis on analytical thinking stood out immediately. I wanted a program that would not only challenge me academically but also prepare me for sophisticated legal practice in an increasingly global business environment. The opportunity to combine theoretical depth with practical legal training made UChicago the ideal fit.

What perspective or experience from your home country are you most excited to share with your classmates at UChicago Law?

I’m excited to share the perspective of someone who has worked both inside and outside the legal profession. Discussing law with millions of people online has taught me how differently legal ideas are understood outside academic and professional circles, and I hope that perspective contributes to classroom conversations.

What do you hope to do after earning your LL.M.?

After earning my LL.M., I hope to build my career in cross border corporate legal practice while continuing to explore the broader questions that first drew me back to academia. In the long term, I would like to combine rigorous legal practice with opportunities to contribute to public legal education and policy discussions.

What are you most excited about experiencing this year—whether at the Law School, in Chicago, or in the United States?

I’m  looking forward to being challenged in a classroom full of brilliant people from all over the world and, hopefully, keeping up with them. Outside the Law School, I’m excited to experience Chicago, survive my first real winter, and finally understand why Americans put ranch dressing on absolutely everything.

What’s something your classmates might be surprised to learn about you?

People are often surprised that, outside of law, I’ve spent a lot of time on stage. My dance team won Greece’s Got Talent  in 2017, I now perform stand-up comedy, and I’ve recently taken up aerial silks. Apparently, I have a hard time choosing hobbies that don’t involve an audience—or the risk of falling.

Is there anything else you’d like the UChicago Law community to know about you?

Nefeli Megalovasili conducting interview

I’ve been told I have an unhealthy combination of curiosity and a complete lack of risk awareness. It’s the same mindset that somehow led me to interview the Prime Minister of Greece in 2023, despite never planning to become a journalist. So, if I raise my hand in class a little too often, now you know why.
