A film that was arguably the Best Animated Movie of 2021 is finally getting the sequel it deserves. Variety reports that Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are teaming up for a sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines. This news comes four years after The Mitchells vs. the Machines debuted on Netflix, where it quickly rose through the streamer’s charts.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines was originally scheduled to come out on the big screen, but the closure of movie theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused Sony Pictures Animation to pivot and sell the film to Netflix in 2021. With the majority of the population stuck indoors because of the pandemic, The Mitchells vs. the Machines became Netflix’s most-viewed animated program at the time, and boasts a 97 percent Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes out of 212 critic reviews. It was also nominated for Best Animated Picture at the Oscars.
The animated movie features the Mitchell Family as their father, Rick Mitchell (Danny McBride), takes his family on a road trip to drop their daughter Katie (Abbi Jacobson) off at film school in California. This trip winds up having bigger consequences when they are tasked with saving the world from a robot apocalypse. The rest of the Mitchells are voiced by Maya Rudolph as the motherly Linda Mitchell and director Mike Rianda as Katie’s younger brother, Aaron Mitchell.
Guillermo Martinez and JP Sans are directing the sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines. Martinez’s credits include being head of story on the first flick, and Sans was co-director of The Bad Guys 2.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines would continue Netflix and Sony’s hot streak when it comes to animated features. The two companies recently collaborated on KPop Demon Hunters. Similar to The Mitchells vs. the Machines, KPop Demon Hunters was produced by Sony and released by Netflix, where it holds the honor of being Netflix’s most-watched movie ever. Netflix and Sony are also working on a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters.
