Norway pledges $1.8mn to Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund
Norway has pledged NOK 20mn ($1.8mn) to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund for 2024, as announced by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This contribution brings Norway’s total donations to the fund to over NOK 189mn ($17.6mn) in the past decade.

This new pledge comes in response to ongoing warnings from U.N. agencies about a funding gap for humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan. The return of the Taliban to power has worsened the country’s humanitarian crisis, with severe impacts on food security and overall aid distribution.
The World Food Program (WFP) has recently highlighted that budget constraints may lead to the denial of critical nutrition aid to more than one million mothers and children. According to the United Nations, nearly 24mn Afghans are in need of humanitarian assistance, with 3.9mn facing malnutrition.
OCHA did not detail the allocation of Norway’s latest funds in its statement released on September 8 via its X account. However, it did emphasize that Norway’s total contributions to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund have exceeded $17.5mn over the past decade.
Other countries, including Sweden, Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Switzerland, have also contributed to the fund in the past year. The U.N. reports that in 2024, about 24mn people, including 12.3mn children, in Afghanistan require humanitarian aid.
