The Rising Pace Sensation from Kashmir

By Imran Nabi

SRINAGAR: Born on November 4, 1996, in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, Auqib Nabi has emerged as a key figure in the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team. A right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler, he has been representing his state at the national level for a decade, consistently delivering standout performances.

Auqib Nabi made his first-class debut in the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy, making an immediate impact with a five-wicket haul against Jharkhand. Since then, he has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket, representing Jammu and Kashmir across various tournaments. His journey through the ranks has seen him play in the Cooch Behar Trophy at the Under-19 level, the Col C K Nayudu Trophy for Under-23 players, and elite competitions such as the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and the Ranji Trophy. His steady rise and ability to deliver under pressure have cemented his place as a key player for his team.

His performances have earned him the monikers Shaane Baramulla and Baramulla Express, a testament to his impact on the cricketing landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.

A Record-Breaking Season

In the current Ranji Trophy season, Auqib has been in blistering form, taking 44 wickets—the highest by a pacer this season—including six five-wicket hauls. His tally has set a new record for the highest number of wickets taken by a Jammu and Kashmir bowler in a single Ranji season, surpassing veteran cricketer Parvez Rasool. Despite this achievement, he remains overlooked in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, a disappointment given his consistency and growing reputation as one of India’s most promising fast bowlers.

Consistency Across Formats

Beyond the Ranji Trophy, Auqib has also made a mark in List A cricket. In 29 matches, he has scored 670 runs at an average of 17.63 with a strike rate of 50.87. With the ball, he has taken 90 wickets at an average of 22.12, maintaining an economy rate of 2.98. His recent performances against Kerala, Baroda, Mumbai, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram have been particularly noteworthy, with 44 wickets across these encounters.

The Making of a Cricketer

Reflecting on his journey, Auqib recalls starting with tennis-ball cricket before transitioning to leather-ball cricket. A friend’s suggestion led him to trial for the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association. Initially rejected, he persisted, securing a place in the Under-19 team the following year. His selection marked a turning point. “It was the best moment for me—representing my state at the national level,” he said. “After that, I never looked back. In 2019, I made my senior team debut against Jharkhand, taking five wickets in that match. Performing on such a big stage was an incredible feeling.”

Inspired by a Legend

Auqib credits former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn as his inspiration. “Steyn’s bowling action, top speed, and aggression have always fascinated me. Just as he represented his country at the highest level, I aspire to do the same for my state and my nation. I am working tirelessly to achieve that dream.”

The Challenges of Infrastructure in JK

Despite his success, Auqib acknowledges the challenges of pursuing cricket in Jammu and Kashmir. “It is extremely difficult for a player from here to reach the highest level because of the lack of infrastructure. We have only two proper grounds—one in Jammu and one in Srinagar—and far fewer turf wickets compared to other states.” However, he notes that the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association is making efforts to improve facilities, with plans to introduce red-soil pitches. “Practicing on such wickets will help us refine our skills, allowing us to compete more effectively at higher levels.”

Advice for Aspiring Cricketers

For young cricketers looking to follow in his footsteps, Auqib emphasises dedication and discipline. “Focus on the process—train hard, build your fitness, and spend as much time as possible practising. Fitness is crucial for any athlete. A proper diet and relentless effort will eventually lead to success.”

As he continues his journey, Auqib Nabi remains one of the brightest prospects in Indian domestic cricket, determined to carry the hopes of Jammu and Kashmir onto the national stage.
