A blockbuster Dhanteras-Diwali weekend has topped robust festive season sales growth for consumer products industry, specifically automobiles and durables segments. Companies expect the robust sales momentum to continue with the onset of the wedding season.

“Over the 30-day period from Navratri to Diwali, we have achieved a landmark milestone with over one-lakh vehicle deliveries, reflecting a 33 per cent growth compared to the same period last year. Our SUVs continue to lead this momentum with the Nexon registering over 38,000 retails, a 73 per cent growth, while the Punch clocked 32,000 units, growing 29 per cent year-on-year. We believe this performance sets the tone for the rest of the fiscal, especially as we gear up for exciting new launches this year,” said Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, who is also the President at Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Festival drive

Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and COO, Hyundai Motor India (HMIL), said demand accelerated sharply from Navratri and continued through Dhanteras. “This is supported by GST 2.0 reforms, tax and repo rate reliefs and buoyant consumer sentiment. HMIL kicked off the season on a record note, clocking over 11,000 dealer billings on the very first day of Navratri, the highest single-day tally in the last five years,” he said, adding, “This momentum has carried through the entire Navratri period till Dhanteras. Bookings have been averaging nearly 3,500 per day, a 17 per cent growth over last year. Retail sales have surged at an even faster pace, up 30 per cent y-o-y, with nearly 2,500 cars delivered daily. During the Dhanteras period alone, Hyundai delivered about 14,000 cars, a 20 per cent higher than last year.”

Sparkling season

Consumer durables too have been witnessing a sparkling festival season fuelled by premiumisation trends with a further spike seen during the Dhanteras-Diwali weekend. Players said sales growth was better than expectations.

Said NS Satish, President, Haier Appliances India: “The sell-out momentum continued to be strong through the festival season especially during the Dhanteras-Diwali period. This was led by premium products such as large screen, side-by-side refrigerators and front-load washing machines. Overall during the festival period we have recorded a growth of more than 50 per cent. The GST rate cut directly benefited categories such as large-screen TVs and air-conditioners and indirectly by putting more money in the hands of consumers.”

Players expect this demand momentum to continue in November-December period.

Retail sales up

Nilesh Gupta, Director, Vijay Sales, said that the retail chain witnessed over 20 per cent growth during the festival season, which was higher than expectations.

According to estimates released by the Confederation of All India Traders, total Diwali sales this year touched a record ₹6.05 lakh crore, comprising ₹5.40 lakh crore in goods and ₹65,000 crore in services, marking the highest-ever festive business in India’s trading history. CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal, who is also MP, Chandni Chowk ,noted that the Diwali trade figures indicate a double-digit rise over last year’s ₹4.25 lakh crore sales. He added that strong surge in sales was seen at traditional markets and non-corporate retailers.
